{"id":3767,"date":"2023-03-21T23:56:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T23:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/?page_id=3767"},"modified":"2023-11-20T20:37:27","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T20:37:27","slug":"two-poems-4","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/vol-4-winter-2023-2024\/two-poems-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h4><em>Allison Gellerstein<\/em><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Room-Box Quiz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A friend asked me once to describe a box,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where was it in the room, what color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was purple in the center of the room,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">parallel to a horse sniffing at the ground\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">opposite the window I conjured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The room-box quiz was my friend\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">invention and in her fortune telling\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">experiment, the horse represented\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that my future great love will be<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">observant and perceptive. Hers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">breathed fire and neither of us\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">could find an explanation for that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My current boyfriend, when he was\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">asked, said his horse was\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">confused how it got there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And I am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am in a constant state of wonder<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at the person I accidentally turned\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">into, the things I\u2019ve written, the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pranks and nonsense I\u2019ve perpetrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do I match my own steps to<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the tire treads in the sand ahead\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when none of it is playing out\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the way I thought it would<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your Designated Corner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nice people don\u2019t comment on the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">basket of unfolded laundry\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sitting in the center of the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">room, or maybe not exactly\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the middle, but right next<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to your bed, jutting out a little.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nice people won\u2019t tell you that<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you\u2019re taking up too much space,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more than yours as allotted, but\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sometimes they also don\u2019t care and\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it\u2019s only you who feels you should\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">go stand in the corner,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">like a rook on a small black square,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you should only move in prescribed<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ways, you are not the most important here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nice people respond with gentle<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">affirmations that you are doing fine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and thank you for dusting the desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Allison Gellerstein<\/strong> (24\u2019) is a junior studying English and creative writing with the aim of teaching high school English.
