 <\/p>\n

maybe if i was French<\/span><\/p>\n

i could light a cigarette\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and let the smoke billow\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

as a phoenix rises\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

from the other end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

but instead<\/span><\/p>\n

my steel ribcage recoils<\/span><\/p>\n

like a gun\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n

phantom limb and<\/span><\/p>\n

my palm carves itself<\/span><\/p>\n

into the wall\u2019s flesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

i feel the pulse of\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

an egg yolk<\/span><\/p>\n

as it separates\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

into a pool of yellow<\/span><\/p>\n

marmalade.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the inhale of<\/span><\/p>\n

cigarette smoke<\/span><\/p>\n

brings forth\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

visions of crystal balls<\/span><\/p>\n

and walking cartoons\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and half-dead horses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

hooves<\/span><\/p>\n

graze the nape of my neck<\/span><\/p>\n

like the spokes of\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a twisted umbrella<\/span><\/p>\n

as i trace angels<\/span><\/p>\n

into the frosted glass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

these visions pass with time\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and so i sit in<\/span><\/p>\n

the windowless chair<\/span><\/p>\n

praying to hear<\/span><\/p>\n

the chime of a clock<\/span><\/p>\n

only to hear<\/span><\/p>\n

the blare of a fire alarm<\/span><\/p>\n

in a room of mirrors.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sophia Reich<\/strong> is a Rutgers Honors College student from High Bridge, New Jersey. She intends on majoring in Cell Biology and Neuroscience with a minor in Art History. Her interest in writing stems from her interest in the intersection of visual art forms and literature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
