The brick building looks familiar although I\u2019ve never been here.<\/p>\n
My mother stands in the distance,<\/p>\n
her arms crossed,<\/p>\n
her dark hair against the clear blue sky.<\/p>\n
In her eyes, flashes of her own childhood.<\/p>\n
Young children run in the yard,<\/p>\n
books clutched tightly in their arms.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Here, she learned how to do it,<\/p>\n
on a Saturday in 1978.<\/p>\n
The wind blowing through her hair.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We have driven an hour to get here,<\/p>\n
hoping this schoolyard will provide the juju.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve failed to take off in the past<\/p>\n
throughout schoolyards and parking lots in my hometown.<\/p>\n
I could not break the fear of imbalance.<\/p>\n
My body wobbling as I fell to the ground.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Nobody tells me how it will feel.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t remember how it happens.<\/p>\n
An old Ford passes in the street.<\/p>\n
I let go of the green chain-link fence.<\/p>\n
The pedals spring forward,<\/p>\n
the universe in perfect unison.<\/p>\n
The wind blows through my hair.<\/p>\n
