Girl, Friend, and I<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fingers lined and positioned at our heads<\/p>\n

You mapped my body with quick pinpoints<\/p>\n

In plain sight, so slick it went through me<\/p>\n

As I lunged into you in the school hallway<\/p>\n

Barricading the masses during classtime rush<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Knee deep during blessings and<\/p>\n

forewarned benedictions of sorts<\/p>\n

Behind our words and Witnesses<\/p>\n

Your palms sewed crosses over mine<\/p>\n

Our tongues were severed in two<\/p>\n

Of Young Eves\u2019 ungodly divide<\/p>\n

So I kept my shoulders shrugged<\/p>\n

Shelved into my skinny jean pockets<\/p>\n

Too shallow to hide the telling scales<\/p>\n

Shedding off all shouting evidence<\/p>\n

Of your loving rings around my neck<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I taught our calluses not to touch<\/p>\n

When the sidewalk grew too small<\/p>\n

I failed to tell you of how I tried<\/p>\n

To scrape off every scent of us<\/p>\n

Hiding yet scratching beneath<\/p>\n

The chair scribbled floor tiles<\/p>\n

With spare steel sponges I found<\/p>\n

In hidden corners of the church<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Three levels down into the basement kitchen<\/p>\n

Where old ladies wished me the bearing luck<\/p>\n

Of senior year marriages and social approval<\/p>\n

Of teen pregnancies to start my prospective<\/p>\n

Young family of far too many<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With bleeding hands and tearing gums<\/p>\n

I slanted a grin and let my head find buoyancy<\/p>\n

So I could find my marred palms<\/p>\n

and cover my eyes from the man-shaped dents<\/p>\n

Often found on warm tables and lit up faces<\/p>\n

behind fists and unopened pew Bibles<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fingers circled and knuckles curled in<\/p>\n

Years still yet your marques remain<\/p>\n

Meticulously onto my framed bones<\/p>\n

Further than sight and languages away<\/p>\n

We learned to give breath in our new way<\/p>\n

We went to bed<\/p>\n

And in the morning<\/p>\n

I saw your skin<\/p>\n

For the first time<\/p>\n

You kissed me<\/p>\n

For the first time<\/p>\n

Because the sun rose<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My grown nails still dig<\/p>\n

Because the sun rose<\/p>\n

Above your knuckles<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t remember our names<\/p>\n

Above your knuckles<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s Sunday<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And it\u2019s reaching record warmths<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s Sunday<\/p>\n

Out there<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because the sun rose<\/p>\n

And in the morning<\/p>\n

We went to bed<\/p>\n

Rachel Baker Lugo, <\/strong>class of 2025, is an English major and Business & Technical Writing minor, from Park Ridge, New Jersey, and mostly Paraguayan. She\u2019s been fond of writing for as long as she can remember and hopes that whoever is reading this will stick around for her journey!<\/p>\n
