1492<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If you ask to see them now\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

What kind of figures they were\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That made me\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What would I say?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I would not know them better than you.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Were they soldiers clad in armor,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Setting out for the journey?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The holy journey?<\/span><\/p>\n

Would there be a new meaning to the ships crossing the new ocean\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The crew<\/span><\/p>\n

Pillaging like pirates\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And conquering like pagans?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Or to splitting the new land,<\/span><\/p>\n

The fertile land, golden caves, round mountains,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The land bent to my will?<\/span><\/p>\n

The new continent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The king\u2019s holy will.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The greed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What would the Arawaks think?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They are Asia to me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Or were they on green and yellow hills,<\/span><\/p>\n

Tall, big mountains,<\/span><\/p>\n

Sandy hills, sandy dunes,<\/span><\/p>\n

Sand in our language,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

History erased and untaught,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once wealthy,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Worshiping distant gods? Original gods,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Original Orishas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beating the original drum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Words and language robbed,<\/span><\/p>\n

With traits remaining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What happened on those boats across that sea?<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Africa to me?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If we were colonials\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How were we also slaves?<\/span><\/p>\n

Did we break their chains?<\/span><\/p>\n

Our chains?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If so,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do we still speak their Spanish\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With our flavor?<\/span><\/p>\n

1868<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sir,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I would not know you the way your slaves know you,<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I was not the one you freed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They say that yesterday night they raised a\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New flag for a\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New Cuba<\/span><\/p>\n

And you declared your manifesto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If you mean even now what you said then,<\/span><\/p>\n

Equality for all men under a revolutionary cause:<\/span><\/p>\n

Black and White,<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuban and Spanish,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Allow me to ask: did we break their chains?<\/span><\/p>\n

Our chains?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Can I also join that cause?<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I also fly that flag<\/span><\/p>\n

That my ancestors and your people\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

Our people\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

Flew?<\/span><\/p>\n

1959<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rifles and flags and banners and the smell of gasoline in the air\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Greeted us and waved us to move along\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As we descended the mountains and then hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the plains still smelled wet<\/span><\/p>\n

From the morning dew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the men were carrying the gasoline and the rifles, going to the cars,<\/span><\/p>\n

And the tanks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the women waved, and one of them\u2013 who I didn\u2019t know\u2013 blew us a kiss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They were next to the children, so many children out playing,<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a parade-revolution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We were like children again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An exodus westward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because it was time for us to go to Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Is it true?<\/span><\/p>\n

Did Batista really flee this morning?<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The coward?<\/span><\/p>\n

The coward!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Did the army really put down their arms across this country\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

And shrugging, hurried us into<\/span><\/p>\n

Power?<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it true?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The new year\u2019s air was electric and we were electric<\/span><\/p>\n

As we marched in our columns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the morning air smelled like<\/span><\/p>\n

Freedom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Did we break their chains?<\/span><\/p>\n
