I am from textured hair.<\/b><\/p>\n

Some days my parts aren\u2019t straight<\/span><\/p>\n

and \u201cextra-strong\u201d bands snap in surrender.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other days my 3B hair feels like heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am from kinky, coily curls,<\/b><\/p>\n

a maze of hair that glows honey-brown in the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

To you, it looks like a good hair day\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

to me, it\u2019s a story.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am from Mummy\u2019s kitchen<\/b><\/p>\n

where Blue Mountain coffee dances around my nose on Sunday mornings<\/span><\/p>\n

Aaaaaahh yes\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

the spice and warmth are refreshing.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am from the Hub City that never sleeps.<\/b><\/p>\n

Dembow and banda shakes the block<\/span><\/p>\n

the second I decide to tuck myself in.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am from \u201cinna di morrows,\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

From \u201cdawg nyam yuh suppa,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

from the cookie tin that never has cookies\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

only thread, needles, and memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am from a praying Jamaican woman<\/b><\/p>\n

who wears strength like armor,<\/span><\/p>\n

and a Jamaican man<\/span><\/p>\n

who carries mountains with his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am, quite frankly, from everything.<\/b><\/p>\n

Patrickia Duncan <\/strong>is a journalism major with a creative writing minor. She is based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and will graduate with the class of 2026. She writes, “I am a transfer student from Middlesex College, where I served as a managing editor, copy editor, and writer for the student newspaper, Quo Vadis<\/em>. I also participated in panel discussions and conferences focused on arts, community engagement, and storytelling.
