Their words crack like whips lashing\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

out of their lacerated throats until they\u2019re nothing left<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

but split, slit, shredded skin and bones.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They fight until one is left beaten<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and the other bent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They leave, not permanently,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

just long enough for the wounds to scab over–<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

him outside for a smoke by the back of the house<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

where there are no windows for weeping little eyes\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to see him breaking his promise to quit,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and her to the basement to drown hers<\/span>elf in laundry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They come back; they always do–<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

him to the living room to escape into football\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and her to the kitchen to prepare dinner for the family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On nights like these, the pasta sauce comes from a jar.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the nasty kind that we hate because\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

it<\/span>\u00a0tastes like she doesn\u2019t care anymore.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They meet each other\u2019s eyes at the table\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and come to a silent assumption:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

him right in his mind and her right in her<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He starts to eat a little quicker and she a little slower.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s the first one to leave the<\/span>\u00a0table, and she\u2019s the last.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I place my head against her heavy shoulders.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0don\u2019t worry, sweetie. We would never get divorced.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We love you guys too much.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I know that, Mom.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never doubted that.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0<\/span>only\u00a0<\/span>wish you would love each other\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

just as much.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
