{"id":778,"date":"2020-04-01T16:24:31","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T16:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/?page_id=778"},"modified":"2020-08-03T21:15:38","modified_gmt":"2020-08-03T21:15:38","slug":"the-family-dinner","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/whr-volume-1\/the-family-dinner\/","title":{"rendered":"The Family Dinner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><em>By Sam Sobel<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We played \u201cHORSE\u201d in the stinging spring heat,<\/p>\n<p>Our 7th grade guts hurting with laughter<\/p>\n<p>Every time we racked up 2 or 3 letters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The backdoor creaked open, and my mother<\/p>\n<p>Invited our grass stained selves<\/p>\n<p>In for dinner: mashed potatoes, peas, and steak.<\/p>\n<p>The theme that night was easy to swallow,<\/p>\n<p>As it had been for a couple weeks now;<\/p>\n<p>Two out of three isn\u2019t bad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We sat at the table taking in gulps of air<\/p>\n<p>Filled with the scent of food, and seasoned with silence.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had gone to wake the guest of honor<\/p>\n<p>In the basement turned guest room.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You heard his gauntness before seeing it&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>His lungs had become whoopie cushions of coughs<\/p>\n<p>That made even the most experienced pranksters<\/p>\n<p>Uncomfortable when he inched up the carpeted steps.<\/p>\n<p>His tufts of hair revealed a Jesus-like appearance in his prime,<\/p>\n<p>And his eyes revealed an acceptance that he was to die for his own sins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My friend said \u201cHola\u201d to the unexpected guest.<\/p>\n<p>He responded, \u201cAre you Spanish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My friend said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We mumbled through grace as my friend and the guest sat in silence.<\/p>\n<p>Forks and knives clanged but the skeleton sized elephant in the room<\/p>\n<p>Left his steak untouched.<\/p>\n<p>My mother painted the air with banter,<\/p>\n<p>A color that didn\u2019t fit the canvas well&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>And my dad sat knowingly, quietly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sam&#8217;s Bio: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Sam Sobel is studying English with a double minor in Creative Writing and German.
