Howdy! I conduct aquaculture-focused research, extension, and education.
The mission of the Acquafredda Lab is to promote a responsible, resilient, and dynamic aquaculture sector that balances environmental and economic sustainability.
My research applies ecological theory to improve aquaculture practices. By studying both emergent and perennial issues that impact the aquaculture industry, I address topics of immediate concern to farmers, while also investigating long-term solutions for aquaculture sustainability. Specifically, I study ways to expand aquaculture opportunities through diversification and the adoption of novel technologies. I also investigate adaption and mitigation strategies for confronting the impacts of climate and environmental change on aquaculture. To conduct my research, I work cooperatively with shellfish growers and other aquaculture stakeholders.
Through my extension work, I serve as a bridge between the university and the New Jersey aquaculture sector. My extension practice aims to support the sustainable development of New Jersey aquaculture by providing information, technical assistance, and other forms of support to new and established growers.
Aquaculture education is a key component of my work. Through formal university teaching and mentorship, an aquaculture apprenticeship program, and continuing education courses for growers, I aim to educate, train, and inspire the next generation of commercial aquaculturists and aquaculture scientists. I also conduct public outreach to enhance the public’s appreciation for aquaculture.
