11:628:340 Marine Invertebrates

This course explores the amazing world of marine invertebrates. Around 97% of all known animal species are invertebrates, far too many to cover in one course. Instead, this course will focus on marine species with economic, ecological, and cultural importance to humans, such as those that are farmed and fished for food production. Students will learn key features of five invertebrate phyla, including identifying characteristics, physiology, evolutionary relationships, ecological role, commercial importance, and cultural significance to humans. This course is offered at the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory, a field station at the Rutgers Coastal Campus. This course includes a lab components, where students will observe and interact with live and preserved specimens.
