Cognition and Learning Center

The Cognition and Learning Center (CALC) is led by Dr. Jenny Jinjing Wang. We study how our mind works and how it develops, such as how we understand concepts like “red,” “friend,” and “42.” Specifically, we are interested in how children construct mathematical thoughts and what intuitive beliefs they have about the world.

Quantitative Development Lab

We study how people—starting in infancy and continuing through adulthood—understand and use math in everyday life. Led by Dr. Michelle Hurst, our research team creates game-like research studies for people of all ages to learn how our minds makes sense of numbers and patterns, and, importantly, how those skills change over time. By exploring how children think about math, we hope to support better ways of teaching and learning.

Laboratory for Developmental Language Studies

The Laboratory for Developmental Language Studies (LDLS) investigates how children and adults understand language. Specifically, we study how children acquire the meaning of words, how children and adults interpret sentences, and how these two age groups compare with each other.
