Nexus

NEXUS is a social club focused on building transition skills and independence among adults with disabilities. The Nexus club includes Rutgers SHP Faculty, graduate students, autistic adults, and adults with developmental disabilities. Nexus meets weekly over the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

Do you live in or around Newark, NJ and are 18 or older?

Nexus is a club for adults just like you! We get together to learn skills that can help you be more independent, like managing your money, cooking meals, cleaning your place, and finding a job.

Need help with something specific? Maybe it’s doing laundry for the first time, or working better in a team at work. Nexus can help with that too! We focus on important skills like problem-solving, communication, and teamwork in a fun and supportive way.

At Nexus, you’re in charge! You choose what activities you want to do, and work with other members to figure out how to do them in a way that works for you. For example, someone might learn how to do laundry from another member who already knows how. This is a great chance to practice asking for help, leading others, and learning new things in a safe space.

Feeling stuck? No worries! We can help you figure things out. Maybe you need some extra time to think, or to try something a few times before you get it. We’re all here to learn and support each other. Nexus offers a safe space to practice your skills, learn new things, and build community. While our focus is on learning new things, our main goal is that you have a space where you can relax, make friends, and know that you always belong.
