Research Volunteer Opportunities
The following studies are being conducted at the VA New Jersey Health Care System located in East Orange, NJ and are open for recruitment.

Veterans exposed to burning trash, dust, sand, and air pollution during deployment have reported difficulties breathing and exercising. The purpose oft his study is to determine potential effects of deployment exposures on the lungs, heart and blood vessels.
Eligibility: Veterans who deployed to Afghanistan/Iraq (post-9/11) who may have been exposed to burn pits, dust/sand and air pollution during their deployment.
Duration: Your participation may involve 1–3 sessions lasting 2–3 hours each session. Sessions will include questionnaires, exercise and breathing assessments. In appreciation of your time you will receive compensation.

Veterans deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq who may or may not have been exposed to a blast during their deployment are participating in this study. Cardiopulmonary symptoms are a major concern for many of these veterans. The goal of the study is to determine the potential effects of blast exposure on the lungs, heart and blood vessels.
Eligibility:
Veterans deployed to Afghanistan/Iraq (Post-9/11) who may have been exposed to a blast during their deployment. The purpose of this study is to determine potential effects of blast exposure on the lungs, heart and blood vessels.Duration:

Veterans deployed to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan may be at increased risk for greater COVID-19 associated morbidity and/or persistent symptoms (“long COVID”). The purpose of this study is to better understand Veterans’ experience with COVID and the temporal profile of their symptoms.
Eligibility:
Veterans enrolled in the VA’s Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry who have received a diagnosis of COVID-19.Duration:
Your participation will be conducted remotely using phone or videoconference software. The first session may last up to 90 minutes. Follow-up sessions (~60 min) will be conducted 6-month intervals up to 24-months post-diagnosis. In appreciation of your time, you will receive compensation.
