In my interview with my mother, Marcia Collado, she identified her miniature-sized Bible as the most meaningful item throughout her journey. Religion has long played a significant role in Latino culture, and for my mother, it was central to her upbringing. Raised in a deeply religious environment, she developed a strong connection to her faith, which led her to purchase this Bible as a teenager.
More than thirty years later, she continues to keep it close to her. It remains on her nightstand, serving as a constant reminder of God’s presence in her life—even in moments of rest. When she immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic, she made sure to bring the Bible with her. For her, it was not just a religious object, but a source of strength and reassurance during times of uncertainty. She believes that her faith in God helped her navigate the many challenges she faced, and that keeping the Bible nearby reminded her that she was never alone, no matter her circumstances.
Although her religious practices are not as strong as they once were, her faith continues to shape her life and values. Throughout my childhood, she consistently encouraged me to express gratitude and to rely on God in all situations—even in the smallest moments, like safely arriving at a destination. In this way, her Bible represents not only her personal journey but also the lessons and beliefs she has passed down to me.
