Between Americas: Brazilian by birth, United States by choice

For Caroline Alhadef Reyes, the U.S. and Brazilian passports and flags represent the duality of her identity as both Brazilian and a recent U.S. citizen. They symbolize the balance she maintains between two worlds—one rooted in her upbringing and cultural heritage, and the other shaped by new opportunities and experiences.

Caroline takes immense pride in her Brazilian roots and believes she will always identify as an immigrant. Her connection to Brazil remains central to who she is, shaping her values, traditions, and sense of self. At the same time, her decision to move abroad was driven by a desire for a better quality of life and greater safety—things she has found during her time living in the United States.

These items represent more than legal status or nationality; they reflect her journey of transition, adaptation, and self-definition. Together, they embody the complexity of belonging to more than one place at once—honoring where she comes from while embracing where she is now.
