At just twenty-one years old, she arrived in a new place without a clear sense of where she was headed or how she would get there. She worked as a domestic worker—cooking and cleaning—and also sewed women’s clothing. Yet beyond these responsibilities, she began to build a life of her own, discovering independence, new experiences, and eventually, love.
She grew up in the countryside of the Dominican Republic, where her family lived on a self-sufficient homestead. They cultivated nearly everything they needed—coffee, cocoa, root vegetables such as yuca, plantains, and yautía —and raised animals for meat. This upbringing instilled in her a strong work ethic and deep resilience.
A close friend, affectionately known as “la loca,” had migrated to the United States before her. Despite the distance, they remained in contact, and her friend became a source of encouragement, urging her to leave the countryside and pursue new opportunities abroad. That encouragement ultimately shaped her decision to migrate.
She chose her wedding photograph to represent her journey because it marks a pivotal turning point in her life. It captures her transition from a young woman navigating uncertainty in a new country to someone who found stability, love, and a sense of direction.
