Shaped by What Hurts

Karissa chose a pearl bracelet to represent her journey as a Latina woman. While the bracelet is undeniably beautiful, its meaning runs much deeper—it symbolizes growth through discomfort and her evolving sense of identity.

Pearls are formed through an unlikely and uncomfortable process. It begins with a small grain of sand that enters an oyster, causing irritation. In response, the oyster secretes a smooth, protective substance that gradually coats the grain. Layer by layer, what once caused discomfort transforms into something luminous and valuable—a pearl.

In many ways, Karissa sees herself in this process. The oyster’s discomfort mirrors her own experiences navigating identity and belonging. As she often says, “Be comfortable with being uncomfortable, because you never know what can come out of it.” She has struggled with feeling as though she does not fully belong within her culture, questioning whether she is “Dominican enough.” These moments of uncertainty, however, have shaped her growth rather than defined her limits.

Through meaningful experiences—such as being recognized by the Dominican consulate as a meritorious student and finding community in Rutgers University’s Bachata Club—Karissa has begun to build the sense of belonging she once searched for. These spaces have helped her reconnect with her culture and embrace her identity with greater confidence.

Now, Karissa channels her experiences into a passion for uplifting others. She is committed to helping others feel seen, valued, and secure in their place within the Latino community.

This bracelet is not just an accessory—it tells a story. It reflects Karissa’s journey and those of many others as they navigate identity in the face of external pressures and internal doubts. Finding one’s place is not always easy, but stepping outside of comfort zones can lead to growth and possibilities far beyond what one might initially imagine.
