RU Cloud Storage
Rutgers offers access to three cloud storage services: OneDrive, Box and Google drive. There are browser and desktop versions of all three. This page list quick start tips. Refer to the Cloud Storage page on the Rutgers Information Technology website for more information for each service as it is offered through Rutgers such as storage limit (quota), how to access and other specifics.
Notes:
- Box and Google Drive require a DIY initial activation. Instructions are in sections below.
- While we are offered a lot of storage space, keep files organized to simplify bringing important files with you when you graduate.

To log in
To log into OneDrive using the desktop app, click the little blue cloud icon in lower right side of the screen.
Setting up the app
Note: In any computer lab, may be best NOT to sync the local “Desktop” and “Document” folders unless you really are sure you understand how this works. It could be confusing if you also sync a personal computer’s Desktop and Documents files. You may not want your personal Desktop and Document files in your Rutgers OneDrive space.
How to save drive space
By default, LA lab computers should be set so that only files you use are downloaded to the computer as you use them. You will still see the files and they will be ready to use, but what you see is more like an alias, until you open the file.
As long as you log out properly when finished, the files will sync back to the cloud. If you do not log out properly, the files will remain on the computer and consume space on the local drive.Read more: Save disk space with OneDrive Files On-Demand for Windows
Once logged in, find your files
Once logged in, open a file browser window and look for OneDrive – Rutgers University. These should be your files. These should match what you see in the browser version of OneDrive.
If it seems like files are not syncing
- Look the OneDrive icon (blue cloud) in lower right part of the screen. If it is not solid blue, there may be an issue such as not being signed in or a sync issue.
- Click the icon and there should be a message indicating what is wrong.
