Scanned Models
These are objects in the real world which have been scanned using 3-D scanning techniques.
Scanning Process Used
- Scan using iPhone with Reality Composer or other 3D scanning software. Instructions here are for Reality Composer on iPhone:
- On phone, open Reality Composer app.
- Click “+”.
- Under 3D CAPTURE, click Object Capture.
- Center object within boundaries on screen.
- Follow instructions to capture (rotate through 3 captures). Follow instructions on screen.
- When finished, it will process the capture and files will be in the Reality Composer files on the phone.
- Find file and open it.
- Use the Share Options to save it to the cloud or send by email/message. For what was done here, only “3D Model Only” (without photos) was needed. It will be saved as a .usdz file.
- Using Blender, go to File -> Import -> Universal Scene Description (.usd) and navigate to the .usdz file.
- Export the .usdz file to glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf) using Blender -> File Export.
- Display using model-viewer Javascript. It allows for simple viewing and rotating on desktop, and AR on iPhone. Use their editor (https://modelviewer.dev/editor/) to generate a page to display the .glb model.

On a computer, model will appear. It can be rotated to show all sides and bottom (if scanned – none here are).
On phone, model will appear, then show a prompt to “View in your space”. Click that if you want to view in AR. Once it shows through camera, aim at a surface to place.
