Frequently Asked Questions

When would I fill out a special request form?

The special request form request should be filled out by students looking to loan an instrument that is not in their own instrument family (i.e. woodwinds, brass, and strings) for use outside of a Music education course (i.e., secondary lessons, instrument technique courses, and Music Ed Lab).  This applies to both education and performance instruments.

Do I need to fill out the regular loan form each time I loan an instrument from the Instrument Office?

No, the standard instrument loan form found on the Instrument Office website should only be filled out once.

Are students allowed to loan professional-level instruments for personal practice?

Professional-level instruments are used mainly to serve the needs of Rutgers Music Department ensembles including Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, Rutgers Wind Ensemble, Rutgers Sinfonia, and Rutgers Symphonic Winds/Band.  Other instances for students to loan a professional-level instrument may only occur if the student has written permission from the Instrument Office Manager (Chris Delgado) and the appropriate faculty member.  Furthermore, professional-level instruments may only be loaned to students in which the loaned instrument is within the student’s immediate instrument family.

Are students allowed to loan education-level instruments for personal practice?

Education-level instruments are used mainly to serve the needs of Rutgers Music Education courses, specifically instrument technique courses, secondary lessons, and Music Ed Lab.  Other approved uses of education-level instruments, such as personal practice, are only considered after the beginning of each semester to ensure that instrument needs are met for the Rutgers Music Education courses first. All personal instrument loans will be at the discretion of the Instrument Office Manager. Students may loan education-level instruments but must complete and receive approval through the Special Request form if the instrument is outside of the student’s primary instrument family (woodwind, brass, and string).

Can Rutgers Instrument Office instruments be loaned for non-Rutgers affiliated purposes, such as student-formed ensembles, jobs, “outside” ensembles, or performances?

Rutgers Instrument Office instruments may not be used for any non-Rutgers affiliated purposes including, but not limited to, outside teaching, ensembles, performances, or other personal gain.

Can non-music majors loan an instrument from the Rutgers Instrument Office?

Non-music majors are unable to loan an instrument unless the student is registered for a Rutgers Music Department large-ensemble or is registered for music department private lessons.
