-
Sunday is the first day of camp, and all students are to complete a live placement screening that afternoon. This is a fun opportunity for instructors to check out your reading and improvisation skills, helping us figure out your overall playing ability and experience. We want to make sure you’re placed in the best classes and ensembles for the week!
Remember, there’s no pressure at all – just relax and do your best, and we’ll take care of the rest for you. Also, keep in mind that these “Placement Screenings” are different from traditional auditions; all registered students will be given a spot in an ensemble, no matter what your playing ability is.
-
A minimum of two years of experience playing an instrument is all we ask for to apply. We’ll make sure to place all students in classes that are a perfect fit for their current experience and abilities.

Our Itinerary page provides a complete listing of musical items to bring for the program week.

The Rutgers Summer Jazz Institute wants students to have a great time! To avoid any issues, please take care of your belongings, as we can’t be responsible for lost items. Avoid storing instruments or gear in rehearsal and performance areas. If you’re in the dorms, feel free to bring your instruments to and from your room. For commuters, keep your gear with you to ensure it remains safe. Thank you for your understanding.
