After three years of fieldwork exploring Istanbul’s historic cemeteries, the traveling working group has evolved into a full-scale research project.
Necrogeographies of Istanbul (NECRO-IST) seeks to uncover the stories buried within the city’s lost and surviving cemeteries. The project aims to map these burial sites, identify the individuals interred there, and build a publicly accessible archive of their histories.
By tracing the geography of death, NECRO-IST invites us to re-examine Istanbul’s layered past, its collective memory, and the ways in which urban transformation reshapes remembrance.

Üç yıl süren gezici bir keşif sürecinin ardından, İstanbul’un tarihi mezarlıklarını araştıran çalışma grubu artık kapsamlı bir araştırma projesine dönüştü.
Necrogeographies of Istanbul (NECRO-IST), kentin geçmişine gömülü hikâyeleri gün yüzüne çıkarmayı hedefliyor. Proje, İstanbul’un kaybolmuş ve günümüze ulaşan mezarlıklarını haritalandırmayı, buralarda gömülü kişilerin kimliklerini ve yaşam öykülerini araştırmayı, bu verileri ise herkesin erişimine açık bir bilgi havuzuna dönüştürmeyi amaçlıyor.
Bu çalışma, kentin çok katmanlı tarihini, toplumsal hafızasını ve mekânsal dönüşümünü mezarlıklar üzerinden yeniden okumaya davet ediyor.
