Robert E. Gross, MD, PhD is the joint chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and serves as senior vice president for neurosurgical services at RWJBarnabas Health. A renowned neurosurgeon and clinician-scientist, Dr. Gross specializes in neuromodulation and has pioneered innovative treatments for conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and depression.
Before joining Rutgers, Dr. Gross was professor and vice chair at Emory University School of Medicine, where he directed groundbreaking research and clinical programs in functional neurosurgery, including the development of deep brain stimulation for drug-resistant epilepsy. His research, continuously funded by the NIH since 2005, focuses on enhancing neurostimulation therapies to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Gross earned his MD and PhD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed advanced neurosurgical training at the University of Toronto and Yale University. He has held leadership roles in national professional societies and contributed extensively to medical literature, serving as an editor and reviewer for numerous scientific journals.
Dr. Gross aims to foster collaboration between Rutgers’ academic resources and RWJBarnabas Health to advance neurosurgical care, research, and education. His vision includes integrating multidisciplinary expertise to solve complex treatment challenges and mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists.
