Erik Gomes graduated with his PhD from the Department of Plant Biology at Rutgers University in 2024. His research focused on the ecophysiology of medicinal and aromatic plants, with focus on the interactions between cultivation practices and plant secondary metabolism. Specifically, he researched how successive harvests affect the aromatic and polyphenol profiles of Nepeta cataria L. cultivars, as well as the ethnobotany, chemistry, and pharmacology of African Nepeta species.
