The University of Tennessee

Amy Alspaugh, Ph.D. (she/her), is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee. She is a dually-trained Certified Nurse-Midwife and Nurse Scientist. She received a BA in History and Russian from Haverford College, an MSN from Vanderbilt University, a PhD from the Medical University of South Carolina, and was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco. As a reproductive health care provider and researcher, she focuses on the various pathways to improve reproductive health care experiences from both the patient and provider experience, with an emphasis on how social and cultural discourses influence care delivery and acceptability. She also studies how to expand, strengthen, and diversify the midwifery workforce in the United States to ensure everyone has access to patient-centered midwifery care.

“I love how midwifery centers the patient in their care and believe all birthing people should have the option to have a midwifery, both when they’re pregnant and across their lifespan. We just don’t have enough midwives in the United States to meet this demand. Giving folks access to the care and education midwives provides means growing, diversifying, and supporting the midwifery workforce. I’m so lucky to get to play a small role in expanding my profession and ensuring more people get to experience midwifery care.”
