The goal of the Symposium is to foster conversation among scholars working on early modern Japanese narrative. The title “Saikaku Bakin Symposium” simply acknowledges the outsize role of Ihara Saikaku (1642-1693) and Kyokutei Bakin (1767-1848) in defining literature of the early and late Edo Period (1600-1868), but presentations will cover a broad range of writers and topics.
