Fundamentals of Providing Inclusive Care to Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients
Research shows that transgender and gender diverse people in the United States have higher rates of mental health issues including suicidality, depression, anxiety and substance use than the general population. It has also been found that a person’s experience in utilizing psychological services is a determinant in their treatment outcomes. At Trenton Psychiatric Hospital we have an increasing number of patients who identify as transgender or gender diverse. Our staff including all providers from unit staff and nursing to all treatment team members including psychiatrists and psychologists could benefit from learning how to provide an affirming environment and promote culturally competent care. This webinar aims to provide attendees with the introductory knowledge and skills necessary to begin providing affirming care to transgender and gender diverse individuals. Additionally, attendees will be given a framework to increase their awareness of and challenge their own biases related to transgender and gender diverse people and will leave this webinar with an understanding of how to continue their education on cultivating gender affirming practices.
