State psychiatric hospitals have been shrinking (and closing) since 1955, although that has plateaued and, in some places, reversed in recent years. We will discuss some of the reasons for this. Readmissions (particularly 30-day readmissions) are disruptive to patients, families, hospitals, and community mental health providers and are increasingly being used as a metric of quality and as a basis for funding decisions. Readmissions are a combination of patient factors, hospital factors, and discharge/aftercare factors and the data shows which of these impact readmission rates. Our patient population is also changing, and hospitals must adapt to meet those changing needs.
