Description: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may engage in severe problem behaviors such as aggression, self-injurious behavior, and property destruction. These behaviors can lead to severe injury to themselves or others as well as to limit their participation in therapeutic activities. Treatments based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) have been demonstrated to be some of the most effective interventions for reducing these problem behaviors and increasing more adaptive behaviors. An ABA treatment model emphasizes determining the functions or cause of the behavior. Once identified, treatments based behavioral functions are developed. This presentation will provide an introduction to this ABA-intervention model for complex problem behaviors and how it can be used to support patients in psychiatric hospitals.
