Xiao Lab receives a new R01 grant from NICHD to study the mechanism of cancer therapy-induced ovarian failure and infertility in young female cancer patients.

Dr. Xiao, in collaboration with Dr. So-Youn Kim from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), recently received a new 5-year/$3.2 million R01 grant from NICHD to study the molecular mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) and related early menopause and infertility in young female cancer patients. The results from this study can help better understand why chemotherapy or irradiation adversely impacts the ovary, particularly eggs (the female germ cells) as well as help develop fertoprotectant drugs that can protect/preserve young female cancer patients’ fertility and ovarian endocrine functions during cancer treatments.
