Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors are leaders in the School of Nursing who have a passion for helping other students. Peer tutoring is a unique opportunity to help students better understand course content while sharing strategies for time management, study skills, and test-taking. Supporting other nursing students is a proactive way to constantly refresh your own nursing knowledge and prepare for the NCLEX. All Peer Tutoring is conducted via individual appointment or small-group sessions.

About the Faculty Nominated Peer Tutor Program
Requirements to Apply
To apply for the Faculty Nominated Peer Tutor program all prospective tutors must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least a Rising Level 2 or Sophomore student
- Have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average
- A B or higher in all nursing coursework
- No academic or professional conduct violations
- Faculty Nomination support from a Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology or Microbiology instructor
- OAS will solicit this nomination following an interview with our office.
- Completed OAS Peer Tutor application
- Successful interview with OAS staff
Program Requirements
All Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors are required to complete the following requirements each semester:
- Complete at least ten contribution (tutoring) hours per semester. Tutors are able to select tutoring requests based on their own availability. There are no set hours or shifts.
- Complete all training. This will include:
- New or Returning tutor training at the start of each semester.
- Completion of all self-guided monthly training topics. Monthly trainings are designed to assist tutors in building skills necessary to support students throughout the academic semester.
- Attend scheduled tutor meetings. All new tutors will meet with OAS on a bi-weekly basis via Zoom.
Peer Tutor Perks
Peer Tutors who complete all requirements will be eligible for:
- A $200 stipend each semester
- OAS branded swag
- Customized professional development opportunities
- Professional letter of reference from OAS
- Peer Tutor certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)

The Faculty Nominated Peer Tutoring Program is a Level 1 certified tutoring from under the College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA), International Tutor Training Program Certificate (ITTPC). All Peer Tutors will complete CRLA certification as a part of the OAS training program.
The Office of Academic Success instituted the ITTPC certificate program to prepare peer tutors with the necessary pedagogical tools to support the academic needs of nursing students. Through the completion of training, tutors gain valuable tools that can be applied in several tenets of patient education including:
- Increase knowledge through the use of active listening, probing questions and assessment tools.
- Implementing new behaviors
- Learning new coping strategies
- Resiliency strategies
- Utilizing teach back methods to ensure understanding
