Faculty Nominated Peer Tutor Expectations:
OAS Tutor Expectations
Training

Initial administrative training via the OAS Tutor Portal on Canvas.

Two hour live training held in person or via the OAS Tutor Portal on Canvas.

Returning Tutors will complete a refresher training each semester.

All Tutors will complete monthly 30 minute training via the OAS Tutor Portal on Canvas.
Participation

To earn a $200 stipend, each tutor must accumulate 10 contribution hours each semester.

Contribution hours can be completed via individual and small-group sessions.

Tutors must attend two OAS events per semester.
Grades

Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average to qualify as a tutored.

Tutors cannot assist with courses in which they have earned less than a B grade.

Grades are checked each semester.
Tutor Renewal:
The Office of Academic Success reserves the right to renew tutors on an as-needed basis each semester. Tutor renewal will be based on the needs of the department, grade performance and contribution hour completion.

All SON students have access to the Office of Academic Success portal on Canvas. The OAS Portal has additional resources for Med-Math, test-taking strategies, upcoming events and access to online tutoring. If you or a student you are working with cannot see the OAS portal, please contact Stephanie at sap355@sn.rutgers.edu.

Contribution hours are tracked using the OAS Tutor Portal Grade Book. Hours are updated approximately once a month. Tutors will receive e-mail communication from OAS with updates as the semester nears completion.

Tutor Expectations:
Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors assist students in appointment based sessions using Big Blue Button, Webex and Zoom. A tutor is defined as someone who provides formal or informal academic assistance that supplements instruction provided by faculty.

Tutoring does not replace formal instruction by the faculty members.

Tutors should not review completed exams with tutees to explain incorrect answers. Tutees should be referred to faculty for clarification regarding any examination grade or specific question.

A Faculty Nominated Peer Tutor has been nominated by a faculty member, maintains a 3.5 grade point average or higher and has been trained by The Office of Academic Success.

Tutors are not compensated by the tutee. Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors who complete ten contribution hours and all program requirements are eligible for a $200 stipend per semester.
Tutor Rights:
- Tutors do not have to share personal cell phone numbers with students. Tutors may ask The Office of Academic Success for access to a Google Voice number or rely only on e-mail.
- Tutors have the right to refuse to meet with students who make them feel uncomfortable or students who are disrespectful or rude. Please communicate these issues with Stephanie or Jane as soon as possible.
- Tutors have the right to request tutoring sessions occur in a safe and public environment. Tutors are not permitted to tutor in their personal residence or a tutees personal residence.
- Tutors have the right to refer to other on-campus support services, Alumni Tutoring, or Jane and Stephanie when student needs exceed tutor abilities or knowledge.
- Tutors are encouraged to uphold the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession’s (ACTP) Tutor Code of Ethics(Links to an external site.), supported by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
Students Receiving Tutoring (Tutee) Rights:
- Students have the right to confidentiality. Tutors should not speak with parties outside The Office of Academic Success regarding a students’ performance.
- Students have the right to report violations of University policy by a tutor.
- Students have the right to uphold Ethical Standards and the Academic Integrity policies as defined by Rutgers School of Nursing Student Conduct Code(Links to an external site.).
- The responsibility for academic success rests with the student.
- Students have the right to request tutoring occur in a safe and public environment.
Tutoring Ethics:
Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors adhere to ethical regulations set forth by the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession (ATCP) along with those ascribed in the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses. (Links to an external site.)
- Best Interest:Tutors will be committed to acting in the best interest of a tutee as specified by the Rutgers School of Nursing and The Office of Academic Success. Tutors are expected to report instances in which students are in violation of tutor/tutee rights, Rutgers policy and any concerning behavior. This should be an understanding by both parties at the time tutoring occurs.
- Responsibility:Tutors and tutees will take responsibility for their own behavior and work to resolve conflicts that may arise between themselves or other parties. Peer Tutors should share pressing concerns with The Office of Academic Success. Both tutor/tutee shall respect the time commitment made for a tutoring session by adhering to The Office of Academic Success’s 24 hour cancellation policy.
- Academic Integrity:Tutors and tutees will practice and promote accuracy, honesty and truthfulness. Students will uphold the Rutgers Code of Conduct in regard to Academic Integrity. (Links to an external site.)
- Fairness:Tutors and tutees will exercise reasonable judgement and take precautions to ensure that their potential biases, boundaries of competence and limitations of their expertise do not lead to or condone unjust practices. Faculty Nominated Peer Tutors are only permitted to tutor coursework that has been successfully completed by a B or higher grade. Peer Tutors cannot tutor a students within their same level.
- Commitment:Tutors will fufill commitments and expectations made to students, employers and instructors. Tutors and tutees should come prepared to tutoring sessions with appropriate materials.
- Standards:Tutors will not guarantee grades or academic outcomes from a tutoring session.
- Respect for Others:Tutors will respect the dignity and worth of all people and the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-determination. Tutors will respect cultural, individual, and role differences, including those based on age, sex, gender, identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language or socioeconomic status.
- Relationship:Tutors will not engage in inappropriate relations with tutees.
- Confidentiality:Tutors will maintain the highest privacy standards in terms of protecting personal information relative to those whom they tutor. This information includes, but is not limited to, educational records, personal circumstances and history, and other pertinent information.

The Office of Academic Success Faculty Nominated Peer Tutor program is certified by the College and Reading Association as a Level 1 tutoring program. In order to achieve certification, Peer Tutors complete:
- 25 tutoring hours across the academic year
- 10 hours of tutor training including:
- Basic skills for tutoring
- Content support skills for the nursing program
- Advanced study skills/test-taking strategies
- Professional communication
- Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
