Lessons
Private lessons officially commence the 2nd Monday of each semester. Determine Private Lessons times AFTER placement audition results are posted (1st Monday of the semester).
Private lesson appointment times are subject to the scheduling of ensembles and can only be accommodated once placement audition results have been posted by the first Monday of the semester. There is ample time to schedule and confirm lessons within this window.
While it is acceptable to discuss tentative lesson scheduling options with your instructor in advance of auditions, they remain subject to the above. Please contact your private lesson instructor if you wish to discuss further.

Assignments / Responsibilities
Private lesson grades include the instructor’s evaluation of each student’s attendance, preparedness, and progress, every semester.
In addition to the instructor’s directed study, private lessons include the following graded components:
- Jury Scale and Sight-reading study by semester
- Ten (10) Jury Tunes study, two of which must be Mingus selections (Jazz/Ed majors: 5 Tunes, 2 of which must be Mingus selections)
- Artist/Mentor Studies, Undergrad / Graduate
- Keyboard Essentials for non-piano majors

Jury Exams
Juries are held within end of semester exam periods, Fall and Spring terms, RHL209, 9:30a-5:00p.
A jury signup form will be posted on the jazz bulletin board every late semester to reserve a jury slot. Depending on faculty availability, certain instruments will be required to attend on specific days. More details will follow a few weeks in advance.
