PLEASE READ:

For almost everyone, one excerpt from each packet will be either optional or only asked in round two.  For Strings, you will have the option of performing a selected excerpt which will give you the opportunity to be considered for a higher ensemble placement/leadership role.  For Woodwind & Brass, one selected excerpt will only be asked of you if you advance to Round 2–it will not be optional at that point.  This will not apply to saxophones as you only participate in Round 1.

In each of the 2 Rounds, woodwind and brass students will play 5 excerpts (no solo piece or sight-reading). Round 2 is a call-back round to determine the top pool of players who will be assigned to the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra (RSO) and the Rutgers Wind Ensemble (RWE).The designated excerpt in the list below will only be asked in Round 2, so players hoping to be considered for RSO/RWE should prepare all excerpts including the designated Round 2 only excerpt. All students should prepare all other excerpts in the packet.

The selected excerpts are found below:

  • Violin: Brahms, Symphony no. 1, mvmt 2, violin solo, m.90-end
  • Viola: Strauss Don Quixote, solo from 4 measures after Reh. 14- 5 measures after reh. 16
  • Cello: Brahms Piano Concerto no. 2, mvmt 3, solo Reh. D- end
  • Bass: Mahler Symphony no. 1, mvmt 2, beginning-Reh. 2
  • Flute: Mendelssohn, Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2 mm. before Rehearsal P to the end
  • Oboe: Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 3, Mvt. 2, mm. 83-100
  • Bassoon: Strauss, Till Eulenspiegels lüstige Streiche, 5 m. before Rehearsal 32 to 8th m. of Rehearsal 33
  • Clarinet: Kodaly: Dances of Galanta, mm. 31-65
  • Trumpet: Mahler, Symphony No. 5, opening
  • Horn: Mendelssohn, Nocturne from Midsummer Night’s Dream, HN 1, Opening 34 bars
  • Trombone: Bolero
  • Bass Trombone: Wagner: Das Rheingold (trombone 4): last 15 measures of opera (aka rehearsal 80 to end)
  • Euphonium: Mahler, Symphony No. 7, solo
