Dr. Chen chaired the symposium at the meeting entitled, “Smartphones as a window into everyday brain health: applications of keystroke dynamics, ecological momentary assessment, and accelerometry.”
Within the symposium, Dr. Chen presented research co-authored by IFH data analyst, Darshee Machhar, on “Real-time variability and complexity of smartphone typing speed among persons with MS.”

Dr. Chen breaks down her recent study on tracking keystroke dynamics in MS patients in a NeurologyLive interview. When typing on a smartphone, patients with less cognitive decline may be better at noticing their typing errors. These keystrokes serve as a way to remotely track patients cognitive functioning.

Dr. Michelle Chen gives a talk for the ANST Neurotechnology Focus Group on “Assessing Real-Life Cognitive Functioning Using Smartphones”. This talk covers Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), smartphone-based cognitive assessment, and keystroke dynamics as a passive measure of cognition.

In this interview with NeurologyLive, Dr. Michelle Chen speaks about an upcoming longitudinal research study examining the effects of nonpharmacological interventions on disease progression in MS. A second article covers the intervention options for patients experiencing insomnia and sleep apnea.

In particular, Dr. Chen’s research focuses on the use of mobile apps and wearable devices to administer lifestyle interventions in diseases such as MS. A video covering this topic can be found here.

A Rutgers Today article features Dr. Michelle Chen’s publication titled “Healthcare disruptions and use of telehealth services among persons with multiple sclerosis during the COVID-19 pandemic”. Her publication examines the effects that telehealth had on healthcare for MS patients.
