My roots are deep. They are in the East, West, South and Central of Newark.
They were planted in this City before the 1940s.
My grandpa’s grandma raised him and she was also my mom’s babysitter. This is why I know to take care of family.
My family has a lot of helpers. We are teachers, social workers, front line workers and volunteers.
My great great grandma came from the South to Newark as a young lady.
She wasn’t rich but she had knowledge of how to do a lot with a little. She used what she could to help my grandpa when he was sick.
She was amazing because candy and liquor did the trick. Even though we can buy cough syrup, sometimes it may be useful to have this recipe rooted in my family.
