Science 

  • Science Picture Identification Worksheet (Kindergarten) 
    • Description: Children should be provided with the attached worksheet, which includes photos related to the scientific events/terms discussed in the My Friend Manny book. They will be asked to label the pictures using the provided word bank.
      • In terms of skills learned and developed within this activity, this activity will help: 
        • Hand-eye coordination 
        • Identifying and recalling information 
        • Scientific vocabulary in relation to the Pleistocene era, Mastodons, fossilization, etc. 
        • Drawing lines and handwriting 
        • Critical thinking skills 
  • Scientific Terms Wordsearch and Crossword (First and Second Grade)
    • Description: Children should be provided with the attached worksheet, which has a crossword puzzle on one side and a word search on the other. Children should first complete the word search, then the crossword, in which they will be asked to connect the definitions of words in a word bank and write them accordingly. 
      • In terms of skills learned and developed within this activity, this activity will help:
        • Hand-eye coordination 
        • Identifying and recalling information 
        • Scientific vocabulary in relation to the Pleistocene era, Mastodons, fossilization, etc.
        • Handwriting, line drawing, and/or circling 
        • Critical thinking skills

Reading 

  • Character Identification Worksheet (Kindergarten)
    • Description: Children should be provided with the attached worksheet on which they will be asked to label photos of notable characters from the My Friend Manny story.  In terms of skills learned and developed within this activity, this activity will help:
      • Active recall of characters from texts 
      • Handwriting 
      • Memory 
      • Descriptions 
  • Storyboard Worksheet (1st and 2nd Grade) 
    • Description: Children should be provided with the attached worksheet on which they will be asked to describe and, for second graders, label the parts of a story. The assignment will explore their comprehension and introduce them to storyboarding elements 
      • For first graders, encourage writing that fully develops ideas and shows their understanding of the text and the progression of a story. 
      • For second graders, encourage writing full sentences, see if they can label the parts of the story, and make sure their answers indicate an understanding of the text and its progression. 
        • In terms of skills learned and developed within this activity, this activity will help:
          • Handwriting 
          • Memory 
          • Descriptions/Specificity 
          • Literary Vocabulary 
      • This activity can also be paired with the attached book review sheet, which is meant to gauge children’s comprehension, memory, and enjoyment of the story.
