Biography
Elodie Passeport is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University since January 2024. Until December 2023, Dr. Passeport was an associate professor in Civil & Mineral Engineering and in Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto, and Tier II Canada Research Chair in Environmental Engineering and Stable Isotopes. Her research focuses on environmental remediation. Her group studies the fate and removal of contaminants in aquatic environments.
Dr. Passeport obtained her PhD from AgroParisTech in France in 2010 for which she received the PHYTOPHARMA industry-sponsored (BAYER) Award for best Ph.D. Thesis. Dr. Passeport was a post-doctoral fellow in the Plant and Microbial Biology department at the University of California, Berkeley (2011-2012) and then in the Earth Sciences department at the University of Toronto (2012-2014). Her research focuses on environmental remediation of contaminated surface- and groundwater in urban, agricultural, and industrial settings. Her approach is to characterize the transfer and transformation pathways that govern the fate and removal of contaminants in natural and engineered aquatic environments to inform design and operation of environmental remediation strategies, such as natural attenuation in contaminated groundwater, and green infrastructure such as bioretention cells and constructed wetlands. Dr. Passeport’s group develop new methods based on stable isotopes to help track contaminant fate in the environment. Dr. Passeport’s also investigates the sources and fate of microplastics in urban areas. Dr. Passeport received the Bill Burgess Teacher of the Year Award for Large Classes from the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto (2018), the Early Career Teaching Award from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (2020), and the Ontario Early Researcher Award (2021).
