Meet the Team: Alejandra Martinez

Alejandra Martinez

On-Board Educator

Ms. Alejandra Martinez with her teaching assistant, SloMo the Sloth.

Miss Alejandra Martinez earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Texas A&M University, and continued her studies to earn her Master of Arts degree at Sul Ross State University. Alejandra grew up as an identical twin, which made for quite an interesting childhood! Miss Martinez stays in touch with her childhood by teaching at the junior high school that she and her twin attended. Alejandra hopes to inspire kids in her community to love science as much as she does.

Mrs. Martinez’s goal as a PUFINS On-Board Educator is to awaken her inner scientist and explorer. She is excited to encourage her students and community to do the same! Miss Martinez is quite familiar with researching at sea–she spent time as a Science Communication Fellow aboard the E/V Nautilus, and also served as the Education Outreach Officer aboard the deep sea drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution. Alejandra’s past experiences at sea will prove useful on the PUFINS cruise, where she can share her knowledge with other members aboard the ship!

Alejandra’s most exciting field moment took place in Point Barrow, Alaska where she worked with scientists in the Arctic on a 2019 PolarTREC expedition. Her research with PolarTREC involved observing the changes in the environment in Northern Alaska as a result of warming experiments that modeled the impacts of vegetation on surrounding areas. She even got the chance to ride an ATV to and from the field site each day. For more details, click HERE to see Mrs. Martinez’s YouTube video documenting her experience.
