Alejandra Martinez has taught 7th grade science for 16 years in Eagle Pass, Texas, a small town on the Mexican border. She is a National Geographic Certified Educator and a 2022 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. She strives to awaken the next generation of scientists and explorers within her students. Her class mascot, SloMo, is a sloth puppet that students are able to follow on social media. SloMo participates in class activities andexplores the world along with Miss Martinez when she has the opportunity to join researchers in the field. Miss Martinez has served as a PolarTREC educator which gave her the opportunity to spend 5 weeks in the Arctic and has sailed aboard the E/V Nautilus as a Science Communication Fellow and the JOIDES Resolution as an Education and Outreach Officer.
