World Ocean Day!

How convenient is it that we are at sea during World Ocean Day! World Ocean Day is an international day that is celebrated every year on June 8th. The idea was proposed in 1992 and became officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The international day fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.

In the early 2000’s www.WorldOceanDay.com was launched to help raise awareness and make a difference for our blue planet. The website provides not only community based events but global involvement through educational resources that are free for anyone to use. In 2004, “Help Make a Difference for our Ocean Planet” launched a petition to the UN to recognize World Ocean Day as June 8th. The theme for this year is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.

The ocean connects, sustains, and supports us all yet its health is in jeopardy. We need to work together to help the ocean with sustaining and maintaining the ocean’s life and resources. Join the crew on the R/V Atlantis in celebrating World Ocean Day by discussing why the ocean is important to you and doing what you can to help keep the ocean clean and healthy.
