portraitJohn Anthony Carpenter (1924-2001) began working with the Center of Alcohol Studies at Yale University in 1954 and moved to its new location at Rutgers University in 1962. During his career, Carpenter was one of the first to focus on the effect of alcohol on aggression, conduction, and visual reaction time.

Carpenter was the director of the Center of Alcohol Studies from 1975 until 1981, and editor of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol from 1992 to 1994.
