Welcome to The Department of Radiation Oncology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey .

The Department of Radiation Oncology is an integral part of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), and University Hospital. We share the missions of the University, the Hospitals and Cancer Institute in providing excellence in patient care, research, and education of the clinicians of the future.

The Department consists of four divisions: Clinical Radiation Oncology, Radiation Physics, Radiation Cancer Biology, and Cancer Biology. The clinical department is located within Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, Somerset, and Hamilton in New Jersey, as well as at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. Our administrative and research facilities occupy over 3000 square feet of laboratory space in Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The clinical department provides patients with a wide range of Radiation Oncology services that include External Beam Radiotherapy (VMAT, IMRT, IGRT and 3D conformal) via Halcyon and TrueBeam Linacs, Cranial and Extracranial Radiosurgery (Gamma Knife, CyberKnife and Linac-based), Brachytherapy (interstitial, intracavitary, HDR and LDR) and Proton therapy. Our goal is to deliver high quality medical care and services to patients, conduct clinical, translational and basic scientific research, provide educational opportunities to patients, health care workers, and the community. Through our mission and goals we seek to improve treatment and outcomes of cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

The department is committed to training the next generation of Radiation Oncologists, Physicists, Dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists. In July 2006, we opened New Jersey’s only ACGME (the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) approved Radiation Oncology Residency Program. The Medical Physics Residency Program of the department has been accredited by CAMPEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs) since 2009 and was the first CAMPEP accredited program in New Jersey. The current educational programs in our department include Radiation Oncologist Residency Program, CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Residency Program, CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Certificate Program, and Medical Dosimetrist Program.

Research is an important mission of our department. There are 6 basic biology research labs, led by 6 different Principal Investigators. We currently are active in collaborations with faculty at Rutgers University in Medical Physics and Transformational Mathematics. Several of our faculty have ongoing basic science programs, participated by graduate students from Rutgers University. Clinical, translational and basic science research is also actively pursued.

Besides providing radiation therapy services to patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, our Radiation Oncologists also see patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey facility in Hamilton and Somerset in New Jersey, University Hospital and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark.
