Malcolm Mattes, MD

Division of Clinical Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy is an important treatment modality to be able to offer patients, because when used effectively it can either cure a cancer while preserving quality-of-life in ways that surgery often cannot, or alleviate symptoms with minimal side effects. I believe strongly in patient-centered care, in which patients are partners with their health care providers. I try hard to communicate treatment options openly and honestly with my patients so that they can not only make the best decision to treat their cancer, but also make the best decision for them as a person. It is a privilege to be able to help people through a difficult time in their lives, and I take pride in being a strong advocate for my patients’ well-being. In addition to my clinical work, I enjoy teaching medical students and residents about radiation oncology, and effective multidisciplinary cancer care. I have mentored numerous students in a variety of research projects, and have led several clinical trials related to immuno-oncology, palliative care, and personalized medicine.
