Mature Paneth cells support intestinal stem cell renewal and produce antimicrobial peptides during homeostasis, and are often lost during gut inflammation and infection. Here, reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation are found to regulate Paneth cell differentiation and their antimicrobial function.
