Summer Assignments can be found in Canvas, which you can access through your NetID login. Please be sure to carefully read the instructions for each module listed below first. Required activities must be completed by the due dates. If you have questions or concerns regarding accessing any of these assignments, please email the preclerkship program administrators Ms Wadee’ah Terry (terrywa@rwjms.rutgers.edu) and Ms. Melinda Torok (melindma@rwjms.rutgers.edu). 

Below are the due dates for each assignment:

Biochemistry Summer Assignments:

Please be patient with us as we work on adding all students to the Canvas page. Once you are added, you will be able to see details regarding the assignments.

  • Self assessment must be completed by July 15, 2024
  • Retake of self-assessment (if required) must be completed by July 19, 2024
  • Expected time to complete this activity: up to 8 hours

Introduction to Physicianship Summer Assignments:

  • Must be completed by July 29, 2024 at 8:30 am
  • Expected time to complete this activity: up to 1 week (5 full days)

The Introduction to Physicianship course addresses topics such as professional identity, medical ethics, humanism in medicine, patient-centered care, population health, health disparities, clinical skills, evidence-based medicine, and health systems science. Please carefully read the letter from the course directors above for detailed description of the 5 components as well as to see the complete list of books, graphic novels, and films.

Briefly, the 5 components are:

  1. Read the book “The First Year Experience: Reflections from Students of RWJMS (3rd ed.)” Download pdf: The First Year Experience: Reflections from Students of RWJMS (3rd ed.)
  2. Read the book “Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present” – Please consider buying a copy ($12 on Amazon). A few copies are available through the Rutgers Library here.
  3. Read an additional “My Choice” Book/Graphic Novel or Film/Play. These books/films are related to Humanism, Health Systems Science, or Health Equity
  4. Write a Reflection (Summer Essay)
  5. Complete the American Medical Association (AMA) Health System Science (HSS) Modules

During the summer, please keep a folder on your computer with the completed Summer Essay and the 3 AMA Certificates so that you can easily upload these on 7/24/23 during class. On that day, in class, you will be shown exactly how to upload your summer essay and AMA certificates of completion to the new Physicianship Canvas Assignments page.

CITI Training Requirements:

  • Must be completed by August 12, 2024 at 11:59PM
  • Expected time to complete this activity: up to 6 hours

This online training (https://www.citiprogram.org/) will prepare you for in-class sessions on Ethical Issues in Human Research, and is required in order for you to be able to participate in conducting research as a medical student.

For now please keep completion certificates in a folder on your computer. Once you have access to ExamSoft, please use the following instructions to upload the certificates to Examsoft.
