I. Introduction to Physicianship Summer Requirements

READ FIRST: Letter from Course Directors and Detailed Instructions for the Introduction to Physicianship Summer Assignment

The Introduction to Physicianship course addresses topics such as professional identity, medical ethics, humanism in medicine, patient-centered care, population health, health disparities, clinical skills, evidence-based medicine, and health systems science. The summer assignment for this course is comprised of 5 mandatory components that must be completed before the first day of class scheduled on 7/25/2022 at 9am. Please carefully read the letter from the course directors above for detailed description of the 5 components as well as to see the complete list of books, graphic novels, and films.

Briefly, the 5 components are:

  1. Read the book “The First Year Experience: Reflections from Students of RWJMS (2nd ed.)” (Please see Canvas for pdf download)
  2. Read the book “Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present” Available through the Rutgers Library here.
  3. Read at least 1 additional Book or Graphic Novel or Watch at least 1 of the films from the lists in the letter. These books/films are related to Humanism, Health Systems Science, or Health Equity
  4. Write a Reflection (Summer Essay)
  5. Complete the American Medical Association (AMA) Health System Science (HSS) Modules

During the summer, please keep a folder on your computer with the completed Summer Essay and AMA Certificates so that you can easily upload these on 7/25/22. On that day, in class, you will be shown exactly how to upload your summer essay and AMA certificates of completion to the Physicianship Canvas Assignments page.

 

II. Biochemistry Summer Requirements (Self assessment must be completed before 7/14/23; re-take of self assessment (if required) must be completed by 7/17/23

Scientific knowledge and methods coupled with compassionate humanism are core foundations of medical practice. Exploring the scientific basis of medicine is one of the goals of Foundations of Medical Sciences block. Before the start of medical school, admitted students should review key fundamental science concepts that they are expected to have been exposed to through their prior learning.

Step 1: To gauge knowledge of foundational biochemistry concepts, please complete the self-assessment quiz available here. If you prefer, you may review the podcasts and other materials posted in the Biochemistry modules before completing the quiz.

***Students must complete the self-assessment quiz by 7/14/23.***

Step 2: If a student scores below 80% in the self-assessment quiz, they should review the following four modules to clarify muddy points.

Note that Modules II and IV are problem-solving workshops. Students should solve the workshop problems before viewing the linked podcasts and slides.

Step 3: After reviewing the modules, students must retake the self-assessment quiz, which will now be available as “Retake Self-Assessment Quiz.”  Students must achieve a score of 80% on the retake quiz to demonstrate mastery. Students have unlimited attempts for the retake but must demonstrate mastery (ie achieve a score of 80%) by 7/17/23.

***Students are responsible for the material covered in the modules. Note that there will be an in-class formative quiz related to these materials during the week of July 24, 2023.***

 

III. CITI Training Requirements (Certificates must be uploaded before 09/04/23)

Completion of Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training is mandatory. The training may take you ~4-6 hours to complete, but it does not need to be completed in one sitting.

The due date for submitting the CITI certificates is 09/04/2023 by 11:59pm.

This online training (https://www.citiprogram.org) will prepare you for the in-class session on Ethical Issues in Human Research. In addition, completion of CITI will allow you to participate in clinical research while you are a student, and may be require for your Independent Project. Note that you will learn more about your Independent Project once you are here!
