“Drinking up” the nucleolus

In collaboration with Cliff Brangwynne and Howard Stone’s groups, Holly, James, and Huan studied the mechanics of the nucleolus – the very core of a eukaryotic cell and a multi-layered condensate.

Check out the video below that nicely demonstrates the liquid nature of the outer GC layer (magenta) and the more solid behavior of the inner DFC layer (green):

The project was initiated when Holly (at the time an undergrad in Cliff’s lab) visited us in the summer of 2022!

P.S., Here is a picture of all the authors amused by the idea that micropipette aspiration of the nucleolus is analogous to drinking bubble tea with a straw 🙂
