Alum Nicole Nelson to Release Debut Novel “Family Language”

Nicole Nelson, a graduate alumna, will release her debut novel, Family Language, through Melville House on November 10, 2026. The novel follows Dr. Mona Melamed, a linguist and university professor working toward tenure while maintaining an intentionally childfree lifestyle. After a family tragedy leaves her six-year-old nephew orphaned, Mona becomes his primary caregiver, forcing her to navigate unexpected parenting responsibilities alongside the demands of her academic career. Through Mona’s experience, Nelson explores themes of gender expectations, motherhood, career advancement, and the unequal distribution of caregiving responsibilities. The story examines the challenges women face when balancing professional ambitions with family obligations. The novel has received praise from authors Leni Zumas, author of Red Clocks, and A.M. Sosa, author of And I’ll Take Out Your Eyes, for its thoughtful treatment of gender, ambition, and human connection.
