Several Rutgers linguistics students (and faculty member Dr. Ryan Walter Smith) participated in the 57th Annual Meeting of the North East Linguistics Society (NELS 57), which was held on October 16 – 18, 2026, at the City University of New York Graduate Center in New York City.
Among the conference presenters were current graduate students Aidan Sharma, who presented his research titled “A Split Scope Semantics for Determiner Spreading”, and Jiayuan Chen, who presented co-authored work with Merlin Balkhash, “Kazakh Epithets: Demonstratives, Possessives, and Indexical Shift.” Dr. Ryan Walter Smith, a faculty member, presented a poster titled “Memory and Motion: A Path Semantics for Memory Predicates in Persian” during Poster Session 2.

The annual conference brought together linguistics researchers and scholars to share their work and discuss developments across the field. For more information about the conference and its program, visit the NELS 57 website here.
